Thumbs up Zeus/Poseidon Successor

Ever since I got Zeus - Master of Olympus (and Poseidon), it has been, and still is, my favourite PC game. Apart from several glitches within the game, I can't fault it in any way. I still play it a lot and I would love to see another Greek Myth game created. Maybe with more adventures, or at least longer ones. Or with more Gods and Heroes included? There are lots of things I would like to see in a new Greek Mythology game, which I won't list right now. I know several people who would also like this to happen, so I know it's not just me.

Does anyone else think this would be a good idea?

Sorry if this topic has been made bofore.

Cool

I agree, that would be great. Zeus was my first CB game and I still play it every now and then.

I enjoyed tremendously the humour in Zeus/Poseidon. I used to watch the funny animations of some of the figures, or listening to their comments. I loved it!
So, yes, I'd love to have another CB game with a Greek/Greek mythology background - and humour - in it.

Absolutely! I am still playing Zeus/Poseidon. A few weeks ago, having participated in the beta and then playing through all the scenarios and the campaigns of COTN; I went back and played and thoroughly enjoyed it again.(I must confess that I felt rather foolish when I tried to zoom in on something, TOO! ) It is a whole 'nother type of playing style but still fun.

There was a lot of resistance to Zeus when it first came out. People didn't like the graphics or the Gods walking around that much. The change from the previous system of Caesar III and Pharaoh, brought out a large number of groans amongst the die hards, because they felt the game was much easier than the previous two.

I enjoyed the humor in the game, but I'd like something a bit more along the lines of CotN for any new game based in Greece. A little less mythology and a little more Hellas history.

I'd rather delve into the likes the Delian League, the wars with Sparta (and possibly Troy) and even the Romans in Sicily, and of course against the Persian Empire.

I'm quite happy with the gods being treated as they are in CotN. Heroes should be present, of course, but they should not be embued with super-human powers.

I liked Zeus, it was cute, the graphics and animations were all light hearted and fun. Posideon was pretty good too. I especially loved the sheep and goats you could build farms for.

What I would love to see is a remake of Emperor. I absolutely loved the graphics in that game, they wre my favourite out of all the CB games. I wasnt crazy about the gods being summoned and stuff either, but it wasnt that bad... the Fung Shui was slightly annoying, but also kinda fun. Just imagine, an Emperor game in 3d, you could see those fireworks at night, and up in the sky. ^^

I second that. "Emperor" is my favorite of the CB series, though the Feng Shui system was kind of clunky (seemed like they tacked it on at the last minute). It took the best of what the previous CBs had to offer. It's quite unfortunate that it never had an expansion pack.

An "Immortal Cities" game for Rome is most likely to happen first, though. Especially when the vast majority of CB players are Europe or America.

That's funny. Zeus/Posieden was about the only cb game I couldn't get into. I thought it all seemed extremely childish. I played it all of two times before putting the CD right back in the box. I prefer reality, or as close to it as we can get. Anyway... just my personal preference.

As I have said before (for what it is worth ), it might be extremely interesting if a developer was licensed (by Vivendi) to "modernize" ALL FOUR of the classic CB games (i.e. Caesar 3, Pharaoh, Zeus and Emperor).

By "modernize", I mean that the 2D graphics should be sharpened somewhat (in line with current standards and graphics card abilities) while the gameplay is more-or-less standardised across the titles (i.e. some of the newer and better features incorporated into the latter titles .... such as Emperor should be added to Caesar 3 and Pharaoh). In addition, the sprite limits and map sizes should be DRAMATICALLY increased so that we can experience a series of games on the same (or bigger) epic scale as CotN.

[This would imho be one of the advantages of employing a 2D game engine .... insofar as modern systems could handle really BIG 2D maps. If such a "cutting-edge" large-scale 2D game were developed, it would be genuinely interesting to see which gameplay style (the building-orientated one espoused by the classic CB games or the people-orientated one of CotN) would prove most popular. At the moment, the superior graphics and larger maps offered by CotN might well be key factors in its current popularity at the expense of the "older" CB games. The above suggestions might serve to "neutralise" these advantages and level the playing fields ].

Anyway, this is all very much of a dream, unless some visionary at Vivendi is actually reading the contents of this forum ....

Are there visionaries at Vivendi?

TM has invested in a 3D engine. They probably don't want to go back to a 2D engine just to spruce up old technology. Not to mention that they probably no longer hold the rights to the old games so they'd be forced to license the 2D engine of the old games just to carry out such a project. I doubt their budget will allow for that, even if they were willing.

Citybuilders at Vivendi are probably a thing of the past. With all the staff gone and studio closed, (even Sierra is no more...its nothing but a label now) you probably won't be seeing anything new in the way of citybuilders coming out from there.

Keith:

Too true .... it is just a shame that Machievellian business practices tend to get in the way sometimes.

I understand that some people didn't like the cartoonish graphics of Zeus and I can understand why. I admit that I haven't played any other CB games apart from on the demos (because it was hard to find any in the shops, and I'm not all that rich) but from what I've seen and played on, I prefer Zeus to all of them. Then again, that's just my opinion.

I think the game was reasonably realistic, in that citizens had to pay taxes, gather food, cart things from storehouses to wherever, and many more things that I won't list. Maybe gods walking around the city, and other such things were slightly overdone, but I've never complained about it before. Ofcourse another problem was the timescale. It could take about 6 months for someone to get from one side of the city to the other.

I haven't played CoTN yet, but I plan to buy it when I buy a new computer. From what I've seen in the screenshots, and what I've read, it seems a great game. I would love a Zeus/Poseidon style game to be produced in the style of CoTN.

I agree with Keith, that more Hellas history would be nice to see in a game like this, but I don't think that there should be any less Mythology included in the game. That's what I enjoyed the most about the game and for me, that's what made it so fun/addictive.

Zeus is the best CB game ever designed! The Gods made it that way.

I'd love to see a 3D Zeus game, but it is not possible yet.

I'll settle for TM2 set in Greece...

Whatever it is they are working on now, I would not expect to see it anytime before next Xmas at the very earliest, or even the spring of 2006. That would be my best guess.

Unless it is an expansion, then it could be earlier.

I didn't read all the posts in this thread so forgive me if I resuggest some old ideas:

1. I would like to have a series of CB games with the following theams:

a. egyptian (already exist)

b. medival (paganian or tolkin type world, with or without the magic in it though I think fantasy game will be cool!) - this game will also should have monuments like the stonehange or something like that (I am sure you'll think of somthing)

c. roman (like ceaser)

d. greece

e. Chinease!!! (did anyone thought of those?)

I think all those games should have some sort of common engines so you could have:

f. a combination of all of those will be called "Realms of the anchaint world" or something

so you could build a city of some sort and have connections with cities all around the world...

what do you think of that?
