You have a Intel(R) G965 Express Chipset Family (video chipset) which probably doesn't have the proper drivers from Dell to run the game, which requires T&L graphics and pixel shader support.

Unless Dell comes out with proper video drivers that support those graphic features you may never be able to run CotN on your system.

i went on intels site and the card does support t&l it said this as well
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3000 3D enhancements enable greater game compatibility with support for Hardware T&L, and improved realism with support for Microsoft DirectX* 9.0c Shader Model 3.0, OpenGL* 1.5, and floating point operations. Intel graphics technology also support the highest levels of the Microsoft Vista* Aero experience. does this mean the chip is capable of t&l and pixel shading? is it the drivers thats the problem?

Yes, the chipset does support T&L but your drivers don't. Intel only supplies the hardware, it's up to Dell to provide proper drivers for it.

Most often computer makers just provide a generic set of drivers that don't provide the proper support for applications that specifically check for T&L and Pixel Shader graphics support.

eleca don't hold your breath waiting for Dell to put out good drivers for your chipset. You might even have problems with CotN.
Rnett the newest high end chipsets provided they have the right drivers can support Vista depending on version.

Vista Problem

Postby Danae » Tue Aug 21, 2007 8:03 pm

Hi I have the same problem as Eleca. I read your reply to her but you never said how she could fix it. I have Children of the Nile and Caesar IV, Caesar IV plays relatively well on my Dell XPS 410. The Children of the Nile gets that message that Eleca gets. How do I get Children of the Nile to work?

PS I also have Windows Vista as the operating system.

Hi Here is my DXDIAG File. I hope this is what you want. I had a little trouble finding it because I couldn't find RUN. So anything that you tell me that can fix my problem has to be dumbed down alot.

Thanks

What model Dell system is this? Dimension? XPS? 4700? 410? etc.

Your dxdiag file only id's it by the motherboard it has which is used in quite a few Dell systems it seems.

Although it doesn't specifically say "dual core", I am assuming that this system is a dual core Intel, correct?

COTN was created for Windows 2000/XP, so it may not be the best to run it on Vista unless you set the compatabiity mode for Children of the Nile to run as Win2K or XP, and you may have to also check the box "Run as system administrator."

You can right click on the cotn.exe file itself in the gam'es install folder ( not the desktop icon ) then properties on the popup list. Then click the compatability tab and set the MODE to Windows 2000 or XP and check the box next to "Run as system administrator".

See how that goes.

I am uncertain how Vista works to check compatiblity
but on a XP system, here is how it is done

you right click on your desktop COTN icon
and select properties
and window pops up and one of the tabs says "Compatibility"

check the Run as box
and select which OS you want it to run as (either XP, NT or 2000)
** Make sure to click Apply
and close window...you should be set to go

mine doesn't show XP as an option because thats the OS I am running

your Graphics card and drivers should be fine
your computer is certainly fast enough
so I suspect it has more to do with running DirectX 10

hope this helps

Postby Danae » Sat Aug 25, 2007 5:48 pm

Hi Karter,

I tried windows NT, 2000, and XP and I still get the same error. If it is Direct X 10 how do I fix that? I also have Caesar IV on the computer if I take of Direct X 10 will it hurt Caesar IV?

Thanks you all for your help , it is greatly appreciated !!

You can't remove DirectX you can only change it
and I dont think Vista will run on a older version
it might just need to have an update

Gee...a lot has to do with how your Dell System is setup

I just replaced my Dell computer 1 week ago and if yours is anything like mine
it had a special Dell install disc with certain monitor drivers, Windows NT etc, etc, etc
(which I eventually reformated my hdisc and did away with all Dell stuff)
but have my own copy of XP

so it is hard to say what needs to be done

It would seem if you can play Caesar IV that CoTN should run

have you removed (uninstalled) CoTN and tried doing a fresh install?
and did you install the CoTN patch??

It does look like from your first Diag.txt file and the last one
that you must have gotten a new graphics card?

None-the-less here is what I would do

1. remove CotN
2. using "My Computer" Icon navigate to C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile and delete the Children of the Nile folder
3. go here and do a complete scan

this will clean your registery and optimize your system
plus do a virus scan and clean that up
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm?s_cid=sah
if you have alot installed on your system it could take awhile

4. then reboot and reinstall CoTN
5. install CoTN patch

see if that helps first

Vista Problem

Hi Karter,

Just wanted to update you.

I ran the McAfee Virus Scan on my computer.

I reinstalled COTN and I downloaded COTN Patch.

Still am getting the same message.

The only other thing I thought to do was report the problem to Windows Microsoft.

It is driving me batty not being able to figure out why COTN won't run, when Caesar IV runs ok.

If this is a dual core CPU then try assigning COTN to run on just one of the cpus from the Windows Task Manager processes tab. This will only work if you can get the program up and running at least to the main menu of the game. Because the cotn.exe needs to be listed on the processes list. If you can get that far, right click on the cotn.exe file on the process list and select processor affinity and then check off one or the other other CPUs lists.

I don't know if there is a way to do this without having the game already running.

Other than that you entire problem may be that CotN doesn't like DX10. Apparently there is a growing list of older programs that don't work well or at all on Vista or DX10.

A good number of other things can also cause runtime errors:
