Re: CotN keeps crashing NOT solved

I spoke too soon.

I was testing my new install, and everything worked just fine. Then I touched one of the files created on one of the days things went bad.Crash.
I made sure all files created just before, on, or after the original problem were deleted.
I uninstalled, rebooted, installed.
On a new file I made a few things, crash.

Now, when you uninstall Cotn, it takes out all files (if you tell it to) belonging to it. NOT so with windows. IT leaves crash dumps and reports all over, and all kinds of entries and flags in registry.
I went through all the hoopla again removing any and all traces of CotN in there. Reboot. Re-install. Still crashing.

I'm getting REAL tired of this.

And frankly, this seems to be not so much a CotN problem as it is a Windows problem. Each time I get a new install or an update, I have to spend days or weeks getting Windows to leave me and my apps the heck alone!

Hi Jytte,

Search for “Event Viewer” in “Cortona.” It will display as a “desktop app.” Click on it and it opens the “Windows Event Viewer.” On the left hand side column we want to click open the one labeled “Windows Logs.” Now you will see… application, security, setup, system and forward events. In this case we are only interested in the one labeled “System.” Click on that and it will display the logs. Give it time to display them all, there could be thousands. This is normal so don’t be alarmed. Once the list builds and it displays, you need to sort them by level. We are only interested in the ones that are in “Red.” To sort them you just need to click on level at the top column at the top left. Once you sort them, the ones in red will either be at the top or the bottom of the list, so scroll up or down to display them.

Some of these in red are related to your COTN crashes. They give us clues as to what is causing your crashes. These are the “only ones” we are interested in. If you are unsure of which ones relate to the COTN crashes you have had, then play COTN and once you get that crash, note the time, and go here to get that System event in red.

Now, when you click on the error a box will open. There is a general tab and a detail tab. Copy each of these by clicking on the copy box in the lower left. Make sure before you copy these, if anything in that list has a PLUS Sign next to it, that you have clicked that open first.

Copy both the General Tab and the Detail Tab and paste them in your post for me to review.

Thanks…RjG

Hi RjG,

Never seen tbis viewer before. It has indeed tons of 'error' in it.
Now, first let me tell you that I just a few hours ago did a system restore back to the 27th, this unfortunately is the earliest one I have as Win 10 does not automatically activate this. I wanted to go back to a point before i started fiddling with registry and other things.
This restore point was after I installed and uninstalled both versions of CotN. Nothing installed at the moment.
I then re-installed DirectX 9.0c, changed a few settings, verified that Net framework 3.5 is enabled, and created another restore point.
Now I'm looking in the event viewer. All the events from the 28th-today are also there.
You are right, I have no clue which ones are about CotN, when I click on a log, it has various info but nothing mentioning CotN (from what I've seen so far).
Another thing, I don't see a 'copy box' anywhere.

I do see a 'copy' in the menu on the right, with the options of 'copy table' or 'copy details as text'.

In order to create a log I can find, I'll first have to install CotN again, then run a test (might one hope it would actually work?), and upon crash i can look for another log entry.

A few days ago, I did a sfc /scannow, and it found and repaired corrupted files (on a 3 day old drive??)
After restoring today, I ran it again, and had those files found and repaired again.

Hi Jytte,

Did you try to follow my instructions to locate the event viewer and were you able to find it?

Yes I have the event viewer open, and I can look at different error logs, But I can't find a 'copy box'.
When I try to copy from the menu it has 'copy details as text', tried that and I only get the details, not the general information.
So not sure how to copy all info to you, once I find a CotN entry that is.

Hi Jytte,

When you see the error, or any error, just for this test, double click on that error so it opens another box. This box has a copy box located below the details.

I can 'copy details to text' to a notepad, and add manually copied info from general tab though. Is that enough?
I found some 'crash dumps' with time stamps on the drive, but no logs with that same time stamp.
I will have to install CotN first, then I'll see if it crashes, then find a log and copy for you.

Aha, I found that. It does the same thing though. Copies the details to clipboard, I then paste it to a notepad.

Hi Jytte,

That will work. Get your crash and then copy that info using your method. Make sure anything with a plus is open before you copy. Waiting.

Thanks.... RjG

I have an 'app crash report CotN exe' in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive though
and a crash dump file in C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\CrashDumps
I get one of each on each crash
