Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom
Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom
Replaying this game for the 'umpteenth' time...MAN I love this game. To me, it is the BEST 2D city builder ever created and among the top THREE builders of all-time (which for me are CotN, Anno 1701 and Emperor).
It has such brilliant audio detail, from the spoken audio cutscenes to the audio cues when clicking on every person or every building. And the historical accuracy (hero summoning not withstanding) is outstanding!
Just some reminiscing!
later,
pat!

It's a bit disappointing, however, that "Emperor" never got an expansion going up to the Qing period. The Ming and Qing periods were really big town and city-building times, especially with the population burst. Military aspect was a bit clunky; catapults still pretty much were overpowered even after the one-and-only patch. For the most part, I did like "Emperor" (yeah to functional monuments!
) although I must admit that I still haven't gotten over the general ugliness of the "Hero" portraits. Would've been nice if they just stuck to the classical depictions.

You'd have to ask Breakaway Games about that, since they were the dev's on Emperor and not the Imps. Of course, Sierra would have had to have put up the money for it, so it's not really all that surprising. The CB series never seemed to get the same sort of support some of the popular genre games got.

2009 And I Still love Emperor: ROTMK
Sierra has closed shop and Vivendi has sold the company away, still Emperor: ROTMK pulls me back to play what some would consider old school PC gaming. Anyone out there still playing this one of a heck game?

Play It Alot!
I too, wish that TM would update this game to 3D gaming style. I think this is my favorite CB behind, Children of the Nile. It wins because of the updated look and feel.

Love rotmk
I LOVE ROTMK!
It was my favorite CB game when it came out. I had played Pharaoh and Caesar III before ROTMK and just absolutely loved some of the new things they put into the game, particularly the neighborhood walls to keep some people in and some people out- it made controlling the city services so much easier! I also loved the monument-building aspect of ROTMK. This makes me want to go home and re-play the game! Currently I'm playing The Sims 2, and when I get bored with that, Caesar IV & COTN. I'm all about variety!

Ahh......my beloved ROTMK! It seems they just don't go on with Chinese games, do they? I sat around waiting for Bioware to make a sequel to Jade Empire before finally, tearfully giving up. Don't make me lose an updated ROTMK, too!
The only thing I felt it lacked was monuments. Sure, it had them, but it needed more. You even repeated some of them! My specialty is Sinology and Indology, and there's a huge array of monuments to choose from, historically speaking. Adding more dynasties would of course increase the richness of the game.
You listening, Tilted Mill?
