This probably isn't anything new to the old pros around here, but any newbies might find it useful. I'm just on my 2nd map now (I'm a late comer), and even I spent a lot of time reading through almost all the posts here, I still had to figure out some things for myself. Here's one thing I find very useful:

I have an idea what I want my map to look like, where the river goes, where to make room for a city, where the desert and so forth. I put it on paper, then go to start designing my map. Only when you're in the map you can't see very far around you, and it becomes difficult to see the 'big picture' of what you're shaping. But, resources show up on the minimap. So I start by placing quartz as lines where I want to carve a river, make a cliff line or whatever. Just enough to form a line, spaced so that they are within sight when working on the map. They show up on the minimap, giving you the big picture. I just move them around till I'm satisfied, and I have a sketch to work from.
