The Keep

Postby Karter » Thu Mar 01, 2007 4:54 pm

===========================
I HAVE NOT TESTED THIS IN VISTA
===========================

OMG well after 2 months plus+
I believe I have actually finished this scenario

For those who have been so patient and those who's input has been so helpful.. I thank you and hope it is worthy

For I now offer you the:

The Keep ...and The Valley of The Ancients

I have tried to create an entirely magical land,
which you will have to journey to, too rebuild a forgotten city know as The Keep.
Your father has recently passed away and you vow to build his great tomb
and perform Ancient rituals of the "Old Ones", whose chants were transcribed
onto, the now lost, scrolls of knowlege.

You start off with a scripted Movie
Pharaoh and his Adivors
played at opening speed .5

In this, you will be dealing with
  • Mythical beast
  • Ancient cities
  • Mystical artifacts
  • Orbs of Power
  • 5 granite monoliths
  • Scrolls of knowlege
  • The Book of Wonder
  • sfx special effects
  • character sound files
battling
  • The Gods
  • Mother Nature herself
  • the plague
  • and the half-man half-beast creatures of Seth's evil forces
This is an
Inter-Active scenario
You must interact with objects to perform necessary actions
Messages and clues are given, objects response will change as the storyline progresses
pausing the game stops interaction with objects...simply unpause to resume
map size : 150 x 150
difficulty : umm hard to say, cheats, hints and walk-through are provided just in case
playtime : should be 25-32 years depending on how things go

Since this is storyline driven,
the goals at first may seem a little vague, but should unfold as you journey on

HINTS
I strongly suggest the following
Limestone Quarry, wait until you have the Eye of Ra placed
build your city as the CoTN guide suggests
read the tips section for special settings

DO NOT leave unattend for long
either pause the game or save and reload when you want to begin again
you could come back to a not so pretty situation, depending on where you
are at in the game.. :)

SPECIAL NOTES
see tips section for resolution settings...I recommend 1024 x 768 for best displaying options

Game play, because of the limitations built into the editor,
trying to time responses for different speed settings and different computer types is very difficult.

Hopefully, I have struck a good balance.

Those with minimum requirement machines (such as myself)
close to the end of the scenario, response may begin to lag...LOL correction WILL begin to lag
Just allow a little time for them to show

I had highest settings up until about the last 20%-25% of the scenario...and run 1.6Ghz with only 512ram
but have a decent graphics card

--------------------
INSTALLING
--------------------

Regrettably due to sound files, this is a 13MByte file size

For Auto-Installer
click the following link

www.ItsMyLyfe.com/COTN/TheKeep_install.exe

and just click RUN or you can save it to disk and run later

For Our Dial-up freinds
if you have difficulty downloading large files
I have split up the sound files into smaller .zip files allowing you to
download a part at a time, this hopefully, may help in an easier retrieval.

these are located at the bottom of this post

put the

TheKeep.scn goes into your C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\data\Scenarios folder

unzip your other files into a dummy directory

the theme
TheKeep.mp3 goes into your C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\data\Audio\Sounds folder

you must create a folder called TheKeep in your sound directory as such
C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\data\Audio\Sounds\TheKeep
and copy the rest of the .mp3 files into it

If you extract sound_part1.zip and sound_part2.zip with the use folder name option checked you can extract them directly to the
C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\data\Audio\Sounds folder

For Our Hearing-Impaired Friends
You should easily be able to follow the story-line, as pop-up messages and the Book of Wonder tracks items of interest for you
Sound files are not needed...they are simply for me...since my attention span is next to "0"

just download the

TheKeep.scn file directly into your
C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\data\Audio\Scenarios folder

---------------------------------
IMPORTANT ALL MANUAL INSTALLS
---------------------------------

you will need this additional file
it can be downloaded here

http://www.ItsMyLyfe.com/COTN/wl_map_TheKeep_1_1.dds

it must go into your
C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\data\Graphics\world level\map folder

--------------------
Playing the Scenario
--------------------

Once installed
Start your CoTN game as normal
click on play scenario
and select The Keep

---------------------

Last Thoughts
Please let me know if you have difficulties
and other than taking stone carvers a little bit of extra time at cutting up a pyramid
the scenario should move along at a reasonable pace.

-----------------------------
Customize your end scenario
-----------------------------

If you saved off your end game,
you can look at the end of the cheat file to see how to cusomize your scenario
to your own liking

I offer a small peek at what it has to offer, you can watch the movie Trailer (if you can view .wmv files-windows format)
The links are here

TheKeep_dialup.wmv (dial-up version 3.0MB size)
TheKeep_small.wmv (small version 23.0MB size)
TheKeep_Theatre.wmv (theatre version 49.0MB size)

Thanks Karter, have been waiting for this one. Have downloaded it and will play today.... :)

Ok tried to play this, can watch the movie, play on the city level, no lag but whenever I try to open the world level I get a CTD no matter what I try. Have a save if you want to look at it - can pm you with it so I don't give anyone any spoilers or just post it. It is in the 2nd year of the game.

Edit2: By the way I first downloaded the complete zip sounds file but there were no sound files in the Keep folder - had to download the seperate sound files 1 and 2 to get those. Don't know if that made a difference - perhaps I should delete and re download the scenario and soundfiles again in case it was corrupted somehow?

EXCELLENT!!

Thank you so much, Karter!

The timing is great, as well.

This has been a particularly intense week, and I am SO ready for a break! :D (bows to the north)

So, I'm off to explore the Valley of Ancients. I'll let you know what I find!!

JR

EDIT: OK. Good news, bad news. First, the map is sweet! Volcano?!!? Hippo World?!!? Excellent resource placement, very pretty arrangement. Sweet touch with the moonset in the opening movie, BTW.

Bad news: There is definitely a CTD problem when you go to the WL map. Also, the installer installs to the wrong folder. It creates a new folder named "Scenarios" in the main CotN directory. It should go to the pre-existing Scenarios folder in the data folder. Otherwise the game can't find the file (wrong path). The mis-filing is easy to fix on the user end. CTD, not so much (but I suspect it is a minor bug--not a coder, though) :D

The city looks great though, and I'll probably play just because it's cool; until you fix the bug that is....

ooopsssssss

thank you, I thought I had everything included
this scenario uses a special world map....
I have never used one before, so when I was uploadiing everything forgot to add it
I have made the appropriate corrections

You can either just re-install using the auto-installing
OR
you can directly download the map here

http://www.ItsMyLyfe.com/COTN/wl_map_TheKeep_1_1.dds

it must go into your
C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\data\Graphics\world level\map
folder

Thank you for the feedback
sorry about that :(

I did have a bad version...so not sure exactly when you made your update
but....everything is correct now...you may want to update just in case

files all go to their proper spots
and everything is included

if you just needed the map and just installed that then you should be good to go

sorry for the problem

I was so tired when I was uploading everything and creating the installer
guess that will teach me

:)

No I had no problem getting the installer to work - having an International version I had to change the install directory anyway i.e. C:\ Sega\ImmortalCities\. But did try the world level with the new world map installed and it works perfectly now. Thanks! :D Can't wait!

Downloaded it! Thanks!

I played Men-Nefer last night instead of poking around in the Keep. That's for tonight.

I'll report back....

I downloaded the 'auto-installer' and all went fine. Didn't play actually but had a look around the map and WM too. The scenario looks very intriguing, its sounds are awesome. Thanks Karter. :)

if not using the auto-installer then yes
of course you need to use WinZip or PkZip something like that to extract them
you need to make a folder in the sounds directory
and move the .mp3 and .wav files into it from

sound_part1.zip
sound_part2.zip
C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\data\Audio\Sounds\TheKeep

if you check mark the use folder names option in winzip
you can extract them directly into your sounds directory and the folder will automatically be created

the sound_theme.zip goes directly in the

C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\data\Audio\Sounds directory

hope that makes sense

If done correctly the opening scene has Mount Katrina erupting with lava and smoke
and you should hear the eruption sound <explosion><rumbling> at the same time

please note if you are manually installing
you will also need to download the world map directly into your
http://www.ItsMyLyfe.com/COTN/wl_map_TheKeep_1_1.dds
C:\Program Files\Tilted Mill\Children of the Nile\data\Graphics\world level\map folder

Tilted Mill doesnt allow .dds uploads thats why i didnt upload it here

sorry it's so complicated :(

but I hope it is worth it

thnkx

Yes, even the very start looks stunning compared to most scenarios, and if the rest is like the beginning then I must say it's more than *a bit* different. ;) :D

Well just finished and I have to say this is the best scenario of any game I have ever played. Everything flowed perfectly and kept my interest throughout. Stunning visuals, great storyline and comments throughout, I especially liked the comment on the success screen. not posting any screenshots as that would spoil it for those yet to play. Maybe later! Great work Karter, can't wait for your next. You should be working for TM!! :)

Your words are very kind, thank you....

I greatly worry about people being able to follow the storyline, it is a little difficult to follow
and I am never certain how people will respond to this type of scenario
its not the typical CoTN city building type

and trying to make it challenging enough, but keeping it easy enough for first-timers, is within itself a challenge, I hope it is balanced enough to keep all interested

Again, I am glad you enjoyed it

Can't wait to give this a try. I re-played your last 4 old ones a few months ago. Each one has gotten better and better - so this one should be spiffy! I like the extras you add in voice, movies, and different/map usages. :D
