Unofficial Infothread on CotN:EE, specifically d2d version!

Postby Aeon221 » Tue Sep 09, 2008 3:51 am

Since I've now got actual information, I figured I'd make this thread less *****y. So, here's what I know. Hopefully this'll save the Tilty dudes and dudettes from having to repeat themselves.

So, if you have the digital version of CotN, stick to the service you bought it on.

I've been bugging him non-stop about getting a patch, and I honestly believe that he's been responding in good faith about the patch coming soon. D2D took a very long time to get their act together for Civ4, and I guess that's what is going on now.

So, if you're looking to pick up CotN, do it from Impulse. Stardock under Mr. Wardell just gets digital distribution. Patches are much faster because there's apparently a template given to devs to add patches to the system themselves -- I'm trying to find the link about that, might be a while.

A link discussing Wardell, and to which he responds.

If you've already picked up CotN from d2d, you've got two options:

Send in a support ticket asking for a refund
-or-
Send in a support ticket demanding the patch

Zimmitti thinks d2d will be done soon, but d2d has already been misrepresenting their progress on a patch for several months now. In any event, consumer activism is never a bad thing. At the least we'll get some hard information about their progress and why things are taking so long. At best, we'll jump start a faltering process. So get in there and whine!

Like the last one, this patch won't update a Direct2Drive version of the game. We haven't forgotten about that, and hope to have news for you in that department in the near future.

http://www.direct2drive.com/Search.aspx?SearchTerm=children%20of%20the%20nile

Still no patch available for D2D users, but the EE is for sale? News would be good. News would be very good. I'm really hoping that "not forgotten" doesn't mean "bent over", because I really like you guys and all!

Please to be not making me sad =(

Please to be telling me that patch is underway and us loyal buyers who chose not to go with Steam won't be punished! I even bought Caesar 4!

edit: Damn, you can't change the thread title? Oh well =/

Yeah they should have the patch already out. There has been no word in forever and at any rate since direct2drive would have a record if someone bought the regular edition they should enable a free download of the enhanced edition.

I originally bought the game from Direct2Drive in 2005. I never could get the update to work, so I went ahead and bought the enhanced version from Direct2drive today. I should have read some posts before I did that, because not only will neither of my copies patch, but they won't work with the Alexandria expansion purchased from Impulse today.
I'm not really sure where to go from here. I think I'm done buying things without a box.

Qt3 generally hears about this stuff a little sooner than this forum, so if you're interested in when the d2d stuff gets going you'll want to check this thread. zimmitti promises it'll be resolved soon, but, you know, things come up. Like Hinterlands. Which, if it's as awesome as it's supposed to be, will cause me to completely forget about CotN anyway.

@Scratcher: Man, you done f'd up! Yeah, never try to mix and match online distributors. It just don't work. HOWEVER you should be able to get a refund for Alexandria from Impulse. Brad Wardell has mentioned on numerous occasions that that is indeed possible. Email Stardock's support department about it post haste!

Good advice!
I've opened a 'ticket' with direct2drive. I'm going to see if I can get store credit for the enhanced version, then just buy another copy over at Impulse.
I'm well peeved! I guess I'm stuck with Spore for a few more days.
I appreciate all the suggestions. Thanks!

If that works out, do post here as it sounds like the optimal solution. Spore, on the other hand, is supposed to be frightfully dull =/

Yeah, it's on Direct2Drive's plate to provide a patch for original CotN D2D owners. No ETA on that, unfortunately.

Updated the OP to include some info that I figured other people in this forum are probably interested in.

I'm going to do the same with Direct2Drive. I think I'm just going to break down and order a boxed version of the game. Does anyone know if the Steam version has a 1.3 patch? I'm unable to get it working.

At this point I am assuming that there will be no D2D patch. Must be the theme for the day.

I am thinking that I will not use direct2drive anymore after this.

That only helps those who payed for the EE. Does notihng for those of us Still waiting for the patch.

ps. I made a ticket on D2D. Staing that a patch issue has been going on for too long, and I will not buy the same game again if that is what they are waiting for, pointed out that all other versions has the upgrade. ANd asked them to hurry up and allow a patch or to download the EE full game for free is we all ready had the old one. ( I admited that was a bit much so hurry up with the patch ). The have so far 3 days in, completely ignored my ticket, not so much as a "we are looking into it"

Update:

Hi there,

Thanks for getting back to me on this. I checked in with our programmers on this as per your statement and they told me that they are working on the added patch to update your version to the newest release like the game developers stated to you. Unfortunately they didn't inform me when this is going to happen.

I have added a $10 store credit to your account for the inconvenience and delays for this patch. As soon as they have it available you will be able to download it from the patches page.

Feel free to contact me with any more questions you might have.

So, I harassed them and harassed them and I finally got a letter and a coupon. Not as much as I was hoping for (20$, so that I could just go buy CotN on Impulse instead and not feel ripped off) but the rest of the answer is pure gold.

Ooh - store credit for having CotN in D2D. How exactly did you put your question? ("Hi, I understand you're in the habit of giving out $10 store credit to those who have Children of the Nile standard and are waiting for the patch?" - probably won't cut it, eh?)

got a responce from direct2drive just now, it was to this ticket ( leaving out the nyob info )

"Children of the NIle
I noticed that you now have the enhanced version of children of the nile. But still no patch for customers with the old version.
Every other version of this game has had a free upgrade to the enhanced edition, except those of us that purchased it from you. This has been going on for months now, and I am tired of waiting. I am not going to buy the game again if that is what you are waiting for. Please either let Tilted mills release the upgrade , or allow us to download the new version for free. Allowing them to release the upgrade would probably be best. "

ok here is their responce

"Greetings,

I apologize for the delay in responding to your inquiry.

We currently do not have the patch for Children of the Nile at this time. As soon as the patch is ready for distribution, it will be added to our patches page for download. http://www.direct2drive.com/patches

If you have any more questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Not getting the feeling he read or cared about the ticket as he repeated to me what I obviously all ready know :(

Well, if you work in a call center for a while, you learn how to work a customer service center.

But remember, this isn't about bilking d2d out of money -- I like them, and I have a lot of games that I bought through them, and I'd happily return the cash if it meant I got access to the patch. This is about being an activist consumer and *****ing at them until they deal with the problem. If you get a canned response, reopen your ticket and complain some more. You'll generally have to go through at least a couple levels of them not paying attention before you get someone who makes decisions.

With most customer service lines, you'll get the generic response that is keyed to fit most problems. It covers most people's issue well enough. After that, you'll get a less generic response that is targeted towards your problem in general, but isn't tuned to the particulars of your case. After that, you'll get a human.

And, as always, remember to be courteous. There are real people sitting on the other end, and they aren't malicious -- they're just average joes and janes, like the rest of us, punching a clock to make a buck.
