Hinterland mods

Postby utopdog22 » Tue Sep 30, 2008 12:43 pm

I have been reading many previews on Hinterland and how tilted mill want to expand on the game once its released. My question is will there be a chance for the comunity to mod this game or add textures?

I heard that it is being written using the Torque Engine, so yes it should be moddable.

Torque Engine is available here: http://www.garagegames.com/

I have the 2d version and it has a powerful scripting lanquage.

Can't mod the steam version? Is the steam version of hinterland work different than steam versions of say, Medieval 2: Total War? Because I can mod any other Steam game I download as if it were just a general install game. Within the steam directory you can find the original file structure in tact, it's not stored in some mysterious cache file somewhere.

I've modified steam games no problems. I don't think it unreasonable to presume that Hinterland can be modded when their other games on steam (CoTN) can?

You can easily mod steam games... I don't know where you are getting that unless you think replacing the executable file for the game is modding it... yeah then it will throw up an error. There are some protected files for source engine games (and possibly none source steam games) that can't be changed for online play... but the majority of stuff has no issue being modded.

The issue in modding hinterlands is that all of the script files used to determin just about everything in the game have been compiled into .dso file format... instead of leaving them in the script format .cs.

This was probably done because .dso is faster to run in the torque engine than .cs files are.

So, aside from an SDK being released with some or all of the script file available then there won't be much modding done.

It would be interesting to see if an sdk is released... would be cool.

I'm already thinking of a simple mod of altering the pc and npc portraits. They are sitting in scriptsAndAssets/Graphics/UI/Portraits as png files. Until we can edit the scripts and add new classes, we can only replace existing pics, but it is a start. No offence to TM but I have trouble finding a pc portrait that matches what I want. In fact all the models and other graphics are replaceable for those so inclined.
