Issue:random lockups v1.0.1030.1215

Postby mouse » Sun Nov 02, 2008 1:56 pm

The lockups are reproducible in that I get one in every game. It doesn't happen with any special action or special point in the game. Every time I get a lockup it requires a hard boot to get out of it. After a lockup I start with a new character in an easy-long game. Have not been able to complete a game with this version. Also can not delete the character after the hard lockup.

Any time you have to reset or power down your computer without having the OS do it, it may be leaving the directory in an invalid state. If you can't delete the save, that suggests it may have locked up during saving.

I'd like to narrow this down. I can think of several possibilities:

1. If you've had a hard lockup it may have left some directories in an invalid state and this is actually now causing a problem by itself. You may just need to check your hard drive for errors.

2. There may be some unknown issue in the save process itself. I'd like to know if the problem still happens with autosave off. You can turn off the autosave by setting this pref setting: $pref::ScheduledSave = 0; It will then only save when you return to the main menu.

3. We changed some things with the audio to improve load times and reduce the memory footprint. Which sound provider do you have Hinterland set for in the options panel? What providers are listed? Can you see if it locks up with sound provider set to NULL (no sound)?

Mike I know that a hard shut down is not good for the running program nor for the system. Will run check disk as soon as I finish posting here.
Now if you could tell me where to find prefs so I can make the suggested changes :o As for options for Hinterland I haven't at this point made any changes using default settings.

Check disk found no errors. Turned off sound but after I did that the game would hang on startup and shut down.

Windows XP would be something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\<YourUsername>\Application Data\Tilted Mill\Hinterland\client\prefs.cs

Vista:
C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\Tilted Mill\Hinterland\client\prefs.cs

The Application Data or AppData folder will be hidden so you have to tell Windows to show you hidden files.

Turned off sound but after I did that the game would hang on startup and shut down

There may be an issue with the tooltip if you mouse over the Audio Device control. Was it crashing with the options panel open or somewhere else?

Ok Mike found it but what program do I use to open it :o
It was locking up at the game menu and at the close down when clicking on exit.

Mike I don't have that line in pref cs file on line with anything about save!

That's a puzzle, but you can just add the line at the end of the file.

$pref::ScheduledSave = 0;

Mike maybe it would be better if I just uninstall the Hinterland beta and reinstall it. If that one line is missing maybe something else is missing too :o

Uninstalling doesn't remove saves or prefs. You can delete the prefs.cs file though.

I'm thinking you must have an old prefs file from a previous version. Can you search your hard drive for all prefs.cs files? Could it be under a different windows user name?

Mike I deleted all the old files including the pref files everywhere :D At this point the only problem I have so far is that the music keeps playing after I click the quit button. The only way out is to click the X to get the game to shut down. Will be playing more tonight to see if I get any lockups.

Mike the hard lockup is back and ctrl-alt-del can't even shut the program down. Only a reboot shuts the program down. Additional information there is no save line in pref. Is it possible that it's not there in the beta version?
Do you want me to try the retail version?
Added the save line will see if that fixes things.

Adding that line turning off the auto save stopped the hard lockup now the only thing left is the music. It continues to play after exiting to the main menu the only way to shut the game down is to use the "X".

Thanks mouse. That is very interesting.

I don't quite understand what's going on with the music issue you describe though.

Which music is still playing, the game music or the main menu music?

Can you get back to the main menu at all?

If you do get back to the main menu, are you saying the Quit button doesn't work and you have to hit 'x' instead?

Yes I can get back to the main menu and that's where I have to use the "X" to close the program cause the "quit button" doesn't work. About what music is playing I think it's the main menu music.
All of these problems surfaced with the last version 1.0.1030.1215.
