New patch, need feedback.

Postby _KPaul » Fri Oct 03, 2008 1:02 am

Most of the problems that have halted people from launching Hinterland have been related to a lack of updated drivers, low hard drive space, the wrong version of DX, and a cornucopia of perfect storms.

There was one problem we found thanks to the diligent complaining of our customer base [kidding!] that was very specific, and we believe we've addressed it. The patch we are releasing tonight has the fix. Our early testing indicators give us confidence that we've addressed the issue, but the problem was so specific that it's very possible there are others just as specific.

I would like to ask every one of our customers who had the problem and are still lurking this forum to post a response after they've attempted the new patch. If you tried all the suggestions and tips from us and our Insiders, and you were still unable to launch over the past couple days, you qualify. We need to know if the patch fixed your problem or if it still persists. We are confident that this will fix the problem for most of you, but we acknowledge that there could be another issue prowling behind the scenes.

Here is what we need from you:

If the patch fixed it and you can now play, then that's excellent! Post a quick response in this thread letting us know, so we don't keep investigating your problem. Be well, and we hope you can finally enjoy the game!

If you installed the patch and you are still unable to play, then we need to work with you a little more to try to find out your specific problem. Please post a response in this thread that your game is still broken and we will work with you individually.

Thanks, guys. All your feedback helps us find those things we couldn't foresee. Your help is immeasurable.

So in case I missed anything, exactly what IS the right version of DirectX? I'm on a Vista machine and it came with DX10 and I assume that it's backwards compatible. Is this true? If not, please provide a link to the proper DX version if possible.

The game still crashes to desktop on the creating world screen.
Here's my latest console.log and dxdiag.

Sadly it is not. You have to go to Microsoft's website and also download and install DX 9.0c. I don't know why DX 10 is not backwards compatible, but the long and the short version of it is that it's not.

The best way to update is to use IE (for some reason Firefox was not being very nice when trying to d/l and install it) and install it from the site. You will have both 9.0c and 10 on your system.

The patch appears to have fixed my hang/lockup issues in fullscreen mode. Nice job!

Game still stops during the 'Waiting for Server' cycle of a new game. Reasonably certain it's related to being on a Domain Account on a Vista 32-bit machine. My account is a local administrator. Some have reported success with loging in on an account to a local machine, but that's an unacceptable solution, since for most people with Domain-enabled machines, local accounts are not available.

I installed Steam (all went smoothly) found Hinterlands, bought it and downloaded it. When I tried launching the game, I got the "Hinterland requires DirectX9c or later" then "component not found" and the installation is aborted.

I'm not sure where the steammaps is, searched and can't find it.

I have had some success, game is launching now, took a sound card driver to do it though, further details in the Hinterland not launching thread.

This may, or may not be related to this patch (DX 9.0c already installed), but I thought I should mention it. :D

You might have a conflict with those two sound-applications you have running.

1) SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio (driver dated 2006) as well as

2) Realtek HD Audio output (driver dated 2006)

check in bios to have the onboardsound off.
