I performed test runs before military was enabled and found that only high numbers (90+ per troop type) ensured capture of the plot on the first run, so I upgraded my barracks to level 4 each and maxed out the capacity.

Chariots are the most expensive to build, but its hard to determine their real impact in combat from all of this. At one point I figure it looks like they are hard to kill, and in the next battle they drop like flies. The random factor appears to be pretty high. Wondering if anyone has got the impression that the mix of weapon types makes any kind of difference and what constitutes a good mix of combined arms (or should you just build spears and archers, whatever is easiest for you to get the resources for, and have at it).

This is basically an impossible proposition. Before military was implemented, the randomness ranged between +2 times the average or as little as .5 times the average. You need 300-600 runs, varying attacker amounts/combinations not 50 times but 6+ times, so that's 100 runs per combo. Very difficult if done with just simulations before military was implemented, and now incredibly difficult/time consuming.

I wouldn't say it's impossibe. It's like natural laws. One can start with a proposition as to how it works, test/tweak it against available data, and make predictions from it. This is science :)

For example, I'm guessing that military works by calculating the 'odds' or 'attack power' or whatever you want to call it for your army attacking each of the enemy spearmen, archers and chariots (e.g. taking the spearman vs. spearmen attack strength and multiplying it by the difference between your spearmen and the enemy's, and doing similarly with all the other combinations), calculating the kill-rates from that, and then from those whether or not you take the plot.

I had to figure this out. The bandit sites just don't have the right number of enemies listed, so don't go by what you read in reports about them. Assume there is a lot more in there. Id not sorted how to sent units in a combined force gathered from my three cities. I'd assumed we had to order them from each city and was not sure how to make more than 70 charioteers. Apparently I have a cap at 70, even when I have the charioterrs upgraded to level 3, which should allow for 90 charioteers.

Looks like my master archers are better at attacking larger formations ;) .
I'm also "testing" if spear men and chariots get similar results, but I expect they do.
Oh well, at least this is a great way to stimulate the leather/cedar/bronze markets :p .
