A game for the mind; Scarab Reward!

Postby Malaprop » Thu Aug 12, 2010 2:04 am

First with the correct solution to the following question will earn a scarab.

:D Good luck! :D

There are five men. They each have a different nationality, color of home, a beverage and tobacco of choice, and pet.

-The blue house is left of the yellow house.

-The Italian lives in the red house.

-The German lives to the right of the green house.

-The man who keeps a bird smokes Macanudo cigars.

-The Swedish man lives to the left of the French man.

-The man who lives in the blue house drinks lager.

-The vodka drinker lives to the left of the cognac drinker.

-The French man lives to the left of the white house.

-The man who drinks pilsner, smokes Pall Mall.

-The man who lives in the white house lives to right of the man who keeps a mouse.

-The man who smokes a pipe lives to the left of the pilsner drinker.

-The man in the green house lives to the right of the cigar smoker.

-The British man lives to the right of the Italian man.

-The Lager drinker lives to the left of the Swede.

-The bird keeper lives to the right of the Chesterfield smoker.

-The Brandy drinker lives to the left of the cat owner.

-The Winston smoker owns a dog.

-The Pall Mall smoker lives to the right of the cognac drinker.

-The man in the yellow house lives to the left of the mouse keeper.

-The vodka drinker lives to the right of the cat owner.

-The red house is to the left of the Chesterfield smoker.

What is the nationality of the man that owns the fish?

*hint*

While this is a logic question, you won't find the logic behind the answer in the question...

Le homme du France

Never mind. I may be right, but if so, it was an accident. Still working on it.

I think I got it & we don't have to solve the entire thing.

Yeah, I made a booboo. Not done yet, but might be German or British.

EDIT: Just eliminated British. German it is!

There are enough conditions to make the German appear to be the owner of the fish, but I can find no logical solution that satisfies all of the conditions.

Does "to the left/right of" equal "immediately to the left/right of"? If so, conditions 4, 12, and 19 conflict.

If there can be intervening columns, it still doesn't work, but more conditions add in to cause the discrepancy.

Yeah, Tut Tut. after getting German, I am also having touble completing the total slate. Especially 12 & 19, 12 specifically. Yes, probably 4 is also involved. Gonna start over. I still say German is the one. It was trouble after that "win", completing the entire puzzle. I got a bit sloppy after that.

I don't think immediately next to is necessary, or it looks impossible. Could be waaay left.

The standard Einstein riddle has 15 clues. This one has 21!

Agreed. After looking at my solution again, there is something not right with 12 at least.

This is tricky... umm... What about, there was a fish, but it was eaten? The German owned the fish, but now he doesn't... or none of those 5 men own a fish - some other man does, like an Australian, or Irish, or American, ect?

 To Tut and Tink: You are both right. As we A.D.D. folks tend to do, I mis-copied my hand made matrix...

In 12 I transposed left and right, and in 19 I mis-attributed bird in the place of mouse. Assuming these mistakes and branches along the web of included parameters make 4 appear false as well.

Well, I really blew this one up. I've went back to edit. Sorry for breaking my own grid :o

Well, I already guessed British in case the cat ate the fish.

:D
