Hint #2-
Treachery is afoot! Talonclaw's first response is by far the closest yet... ;)

Yay! It was quite close though... Wonder if anyone will get it...

Conditions say the fish ist von Deutschland. Don't know what's the catch though.
Although... there is no clue regarding the existence of the fish, but that is implied in the question.

After checking with the edited clues, I still get the German and my order is exactly the same as Tinkerbell's. If there's a catch, I can't see what it is!

It was a fun puzzle!

Kosminhotep replaces TC as officially closest!

And at this point, I deem it close enough to discontinue hints! ;)

OK then, so there is no fish in these 5 houses, and the German has a hamster. Or a rottweiler :)

That slowed off fast!

I'll give it a couple days, and if no further responses, I'll put up the solution.

Thanks to all the players!

I think that there is another pet and that Fish is the name of one of the other pets/people/items in the clues, ie it's the Italian cause his dog is called Fish.
all the other options that I have thought of have been taken up.

Tinkerbell's hidden response is correct, unless there is no fish and the puzzle is simply guessing what pet the German has. I say zebra. That was the mystery pet about 40 years ago when this puzzle was in Reader's Digest.

*Spoiler Alert*

Postby Malaprop » Sat Aug 21, 2010 4:02 am

Some very close calls.

I thought Kosminhotep could have nailed it!

He was on the right track with there being no evidence of a fish provided.

The solution is that there is not enough information to say whether there is a fish or not. The question is intentionally misleading. ;)

Thanks to all the players! :D

It's so tricky, that it means you can't even complete the puzzle. There are 5 pets, but if there's no fish, we don't know what the German has, so it's unsolvable.

I still think that the question reveals that the 5th pet is a fish. Furthermore, the clues don't say there is no fish :)

Solution!!!

Postby Sayamistar » Sat Dec 25, 2010 9:11 am

I'm sure the Malaprop has done this to rack the brains only... Easy solution... However, there is an error. There are 6 types of smokes included in the list. However, if they are considered as mistakenly altered, the following is the solution... (Timed: 3:12) Only possible person to own the fish is German... So what about the scarab???
