I do find it funny though that now people are saying "Oh now we know that she was ugly".

Beauty is far from a universal concept and has changed dramatically over the ages. Even within a single country, the concept of beauty changes generation by generation.

Given that we are talking about 2000 years ago and a Roman's perception of an Egyptian - it's just plain ridiculous to try and define whether she was a beauty or a minger.

Living here in Thailand, Thais always seem shocked at the type of thai girls that most Westerners find attractive. The concept of beauty here is FAR different.... so, by Thai standards, westerners seem to like the ugly girls here!! :D

Cleopatra was thought beautiful because of her keen sense of appying makeup (she made the best of what she had)
...and she went to great lengths to bathe frequently and smell good which, sad to say, was a rarity in those days....

I am in no way joking when I say that I saw this woman on the sky train today!

I stared at for 20 minutes, she was the SPITTING IMAGE of that face. Her hair was different, and her eyes were a little more baggy, but she was even clearly of Middle Eastern descent.... I wanted to ask her if she was Egyptian but I think I'd have stood and gawped if she'd said yes.

She was ugly, no 2 ways about it.... but there was still something exotic about her, something captivating in her face that I could imagine some foreigners would find beautiful.

Very odd train journey! :)
